To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rotary in Australia in 2021, Rotary Balwyn is donating a significant portion of its annual income generated from its Camberwell Sunday Market—to assist Australian Rotary Clubs to fulfill their dreams of making the world a better place. Balwyn Rotary has committed approximately $1,000,000 over 5 years to provide funding to Rotary Clubs’ domestic and international projects. Grants of between $10,000 and $50,000 are being awarded.
The latest round of the Balwyn Centenary Grants has just been announced. The successful clubs and a brief description of their proposed projects are as follows:
Rotary Flemington-Kensington $40,000
A significant project to address the status of education in a remote area of Nepal. It aims to address low literacy rates in marginalized groups in the region which is partially due to low school enrolment and gender disparity. The first phase will aim to improve water and sanitation facilities to an acceptable standard. The project is planned to cover three phases and update four schools in the region.
Rotary Fremantle $15,500
Project is designed to provide a special use toilet facility for the girl students and female teachers at a remote village school in Madurai, India. It will also give access to clean potable water. The second part of the project involves empowering the students with computer skills. The request is for US $10,000 and is part of a Global Grant.
Rotary Hawthorn $10,000
Project to is to provide care bags to in-patients at St Vincent’s hospital Mental Health Unit. The application is from a consortium of Rotary clubs – Hawthorn, Brighton North, Malvern, Port Philip and Albert Park – who have successfully implemented this program at the Alfred hospital and Box Hill Hospital Mental Health units.
The grants program has just completed its third year of operation and the total amounts of grants made to date is $540,000. There are two opportunities to apply each year – the first round closed on March 31st whilst the second will close on September 30th.
As at May 2024, over $540,000 has been donated.
Some of more significant grants made to-date are
- Rotary Warrnambool received $45,000 for a Water Provision project in Papua- New Guinea
- Rotary Prahran received $25,000 to purchase a delivery van for RIMERN Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network
- Rotary Essendon received $50,000 for a project with Bahay Tuluyan in the Philippines to create a place of healing for child survivors of trauma.
Rotary Canberra received $50,000 for a project with the Assisi Centre for Social Justice and Peace to provide water and sanitation to various schools in Uganda.
- Rotary Taree received $50,000 to upgrade and enhance a county hospital emergency Department in Bungoma, Kenya
