Polio Eradication

  • Rotary, supported by contributions of more than US$350M from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has raised in excess of US$1.5 Billion and contributed countless volunteer hours from more than one million Rotarians.
  • The Gates Foundation will continue to match two-to-one, up to US$35 million per year, every dollar Rotary commits to reduce the funding shortfall for polio eradication.
  • Over 2.5 billion children worldwide have been vaccinated since 1985.
  • Clubs and individuals are encouraged to contribute to the Polio Eradication Fund to ensure fulfilment of Rotary’s promise to the children of the world to have the world declared Polio free.
NB: PHF recognitions by Clubs and individuals may be credited to the Polio Eradication program.
  • Clubs are requested to support District initiated polio eradication fund raising events.
  • Contributions during 2019-2020 will support National Immunisation Days, the purchase of vaccines and equipment used in the drive against Polio.
  • D9800 is committed to supporting the fight to eradicate polio and will determine a suitable contribution annually to assist the program and supplement club contributions.

In 2018 there were a total of 33 cases of Wild Polio virus worldwide in 2 countries (Pakistan and Afghanistan).
Unfortunately this year there is already 56 case in the same 2 countries. Fighting on the borders in some areas and suspicion has hindered the distribution of the vaccine and administration to children.
Some good news is that Nigeria hasn't had a case in nearly 3 years so in a few months time will be declared polio free. This will mean the entire African continent will be Polio free. This is a case for celebration.
Our District is planning two events in October to raise awareness and funds for the End Polio Now campaign.
Polio walk around Albert Park Lake Sat 19 October commencing at 10am –join us for a 5km walk, or do as much as you can. Walk Your Way - quick or slow. Everyone is welcome.
Red End Polio Now t-shirts will be available and we hope to a few hundred Rotarians joining the walk. What an impact we will have.

Polio Train Ride Thursday 24 October – This event will be leaving from Train stations across our district (Bendigo, Brighton, Werribee and Caufield) with the aim to meet at Fed Square Melbourne at 2.30 pm.  I have invited the other 4 Victorian Rotary Districts to join us in this adventure. If hundreds attend think of the impact we will make. Meet us at the stations on the way or Join us on the train for the trip to Fed Square.
The goal is to receive club and individual Donations prior to or on the day. Make donations at the Stations. Our motto is 'Its the end of the line for Polio'. With your continued support we know it will happen soon.
