Welcome to today's Rotary District 9800 podcast, Reimagine Belonging. We begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land on which we are meeting today, and we pay our respects to their elders past and present. We recognize their ongoing connection to this land, its waters, and its rich culture. In line with Rotary International's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), District 9800 is dedicated to creating an environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging.
We celebrate diversity in all its forms, embracing people from every background, identity, and experience. Together, we build a stronger community through mutual respect and understanding, empowering each other to take meaningful action.
Thank you for joining us. Reimagine Belonging is a podcast by Rotary District 9800 where we explore the transformative power of DEIB in creating stronger, more connected communities. In this series, we'll answer some of the big questions about DEIB: Why does it matter to Rotary? How does it enhance membership and service impact? And what does it mean to truly belong in a Rotary family that spans the globe?
We'll also highlight Rotary’s programs and initiatives, showcasing how DEIB principles shape the way we engage with members and communities.
I'm Rana Ebrahimi, your host, and I’m thrilled to kick off our first-ever episode with a special guest: someone who has been at the forefront of fostering DEIB in Rotary District 9800. Please welcome our District Governor, Michael Lapina.

Rana: Welcome to the podcast, Michael. Thank you for joining us on the very first episode of Reimagine Belonging.
Michael: Thank you so much, Rana. It's a real privilege to be here and to have the opportunity to discuss a topic that is so close to my heart and critical to the future of Rotary.
Rana: Amazing. To start, let’s set the scene. Rotary has always been a service organization that values diversity and global impact, but the language of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging feels new for many members. Why do you think it’s so important for Rotary to embrace these principles now?
Michael: That’s a really good question, Rana. Rotary has always been about people and about service above self. But as the world changes, so must we. Embracing DEIB isn’t just about keeping up with the times; it’s about being true to our mission of bringing people together to create lasting change.
When we talk about belonging, we’re talking about more than just being welcomed into a meeting or project. We’re talking about feeling truly seen, valued, and empowered to contribute your unique skills and perspectives. That’s the magic of Rotary—when everyone feels they belong, we tap into extraordinary creativity, passion, and, most importantly, impact.
Rana: That is so true. And DEIB isn’t just about words; it has real implications for membership and service, right? Could you share how these principles impact our membership growth and retention?
Michael: Absolutely. One of the biggest challenges for any organization is staying relevant and irresistible to new members while retaining those who are already with us. DEIB helps us do both. When people see themselves reflected in Rotary—whether through diverse leadership, inclusive projects, or meaningful conversations—they’re more likely to join and stay.
It’s about creating a culture where every member feels connected, not just to Rotary’s mission but to the people in their clubs. Retention thrives when members feel a deep sense of belonging. They don’t just attend meetings—they’re part of a family that celebrates who they are and supports them in living their purpose, or as I like to call it, their ikigai.

Rana: That’s so powerful. Speaking of service, Rotary is known for its pillars of fellowship, service, and leadership. How do DEIB principles strengthen our programs and initiatives under these pillars?
Michael: DEIB enhances everything we do. Fellowship becomes more meaningful when we embrace the richness of diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Service becomes more impactful when we truly understand the needs of the communities we serve by including voices that might have been overlooked.
Leadership is where DEIB really shines. Inclusive leadership empowers others to step up, speak out, and lead in ways that reflect their unique strengths. By fostering belonging, we build a stronger Rotary family—one where every member feels they can make a difference, and every project reflects the heart of the communities we serve.

Rana: I absolutely love it. For those listening who may be new to these concepts, what’s your vision for a practical step they can take to start embedding DEIB in their club or service projects?
Michael: Start with listening and learning. DEIB is a journey, and the first step is creating a space for honest conversation. Ask your members: What makes you feel like you belong? What barriers do you see to belonging in our club or community? From there, focus on small, intentional actions.
It could be as simple as updating meeting formats to accommodate different schedules or inviting speakers who represent diverse perspectives. The key is to approach it with an open mind, an open heart, and a genuine desire to grow. Remember, DEIB isn’t just a checklist—it’s a mindset and a heart set. When we get it right, the ripple effect is extraordinary.

Rana: That’s amazing. Thank you so much, Michael, for sharing your insights and passion for DEIB. It’s clear this isn’t just a “nice-to-have” but a necessity for Rotary to continue making a global impact. For our listeners, here’s a quick challenge: Reflect on your Rotary experience. What makes you feel like you belong? How can you help create that sense of belonging for someone else?
Michael, do you have one last piece of advice to share with us?
Michael: Think about a time when you truly felt like you belonged—whether in Rotary, your family, or your work. What did it feel like? What did it do for you? My challenge to everyone is to create that same feeling of belonging for the person next to you. Everyone deserves the opportunity to feel like they belong, and Rotary is the place where we all belong.

Rana: Thank you so much, Michael, for joining us for our first episode. If you enjoyed this episode, don’t forget to subscribe, leave a review, and share Reimagine Belonging with your club. Together, we can build a Rotary that truly represents and serves everyone. See you next time as we continue to Reimagine Belonging.
