The Changing Face of Rotary

Greetings to all Rotarians and friends,

I am still located in Ballarat and feel fortunate that technology has enabled us all to maintain contact and some club activities are continuing for the benefit of our local communities.

Over the last two weeks, many projects and workshops continued online.

Speaking Out to the Clubs

Alfi Huda, a Year 10 student born in Bangladesh, won the senior category of the 2021 Wynspeak youth public speaking competition on Zoom, with an impassioned speech about arranged child marriages. Like all participants in the Wynspeak competition, Alfi found her voice and presents maturely in front of an audience. The positive impact this program has on the lives of school students can be viewed online, and you might like to consider them as possible speakers at your meetings.

The Bernie Gerlinger Hope for the Future Scholarships

Bernie Gerlinger, a Rotarian who did so much for his club and District 9800, is being remembered with a scholarship in his name. There is an opportunity to be part of this initiative to acknowledge Bernie’s life and work.

In memory of Bernie, Rotary Central Melbourne (RCM) has established the Bernie Gerlinger Hope for the Future Scholarships. Bernie, together with his wife Marjorie, was a dedicated and long-serving Rotarian who left a lasting impression on District 9800. As he was particularly interested in the development and mentoring of young people, this scholarship is truly a fitting tribute to Bernie’s life and work.

A Chicken Changed My Life!

For one little girl at Lightning Reef Primary School in North Bendigo, a gardening program, with the added bonus of chicken ‘cuddling’, changed her outlook on school attendance and illustrated the difference Rotarians’.

Rotarians and the Deep Blue Sea

A wonderful world exists beneath the oceans and the seas of our planet. The colours of the coral and of the many species of fish and other creatures are truly magic. For scuba divers, every dive offers a new and exciting experience. And Rotary takes you there.
