An article from Donations in Kind
A wonderful example of Rotary teamwork and community spirit has brought much-needed drought relief to farming families across Western Victoria.

Delivered with the support of a Rotary Foundation District Grant, the project united Donations in Kind (DIK), the Rotary Clubs of Brighton, Brighton North, and Central Warrnambool.  Together, they responded to the growing hardship faced by rural families impacted by drought, providing support and joy ahead of the festive season.
The initiative began when Brighton Rotarian, Colleen D’Offay learned that the Victorian Government was working with the Country Women’s Association (CWA) to distribute financial assistance to farmers in crisis. Contacting Rotary in Warrnambool, Colleen ascertained that  DIK could complement that effort with donated goods, setting in motion a remarkable chain of cooperation, culminating on 7 November, when 15 pallets of essential items were distributed across the region.
The goods (including household items, clothing, and children’s gifts) were carefully selected to meet the specific needs identified by local families. “Many families are finding it difficult to afford Christmas presents this year,” Colleen said. “We wanted to make sure every child receives something special.”
Sargents Transport collected the pallets from the DIK warehouse in West Footscray and delivered them free of charge to Bega Cheese in Koroit, where they were temporarily stored. The Country Fire Authority (CFA) made space for the goods by relocating a fire truck – another fine example of community working together.
Members of the 6C’s Community Cupboard sorted supplies into five groups, which were then packed into trailers provided by the Rotary Club of Central Warrnambool, assisted by Rotary Club of Brighton members. The trailers were delivered to local halls where CWA volunteers helped distribute the items.
Through this project, Rotary and its partners demonstrated what can be achieved when people come together in service above self. The initiative not only provided vital support but also lifted spirits – reminding communities across Western Victoria that they are not alone.
