A project of the Hoppers Crossing Rotary Club’s International Committee was successfully concluded at the recent Rotary International Convention. Pre-convention planning resulted in the gifting of high value surgical instruments to health clinics and hospitals in Ghana, Uganda and Nigeria.
The project involved the collection of surgical instruments from Donations in Kind which were packed into a shoe box sized container. The instruments were then allocated, at no cost, to Rotarians returning from the Convention to the African countries selected. Alternatively, others who were travelling to Africa to visit family also participated.
The instruments were part of the personal luggage of the travellers and through liaison with a local Rotary Club in their home country the items were distributed to a medical clinic or hospital. The medical instruments included scissors, clamps, needle holders and other assorted items which are in regular use in medical clinics and hospitals. The project proved very successful with the visitors transporting eleven packages of surgical instruments to hospitals in three African countries: Ghana (three packages, Uganda (three packages) and Nigeria (five packages).
Participants in the project were very appreciative of the collection of surgical instruments. As one Rotarian said on receipt of his package: “Thank you Hoppers Crossing Rotary for organising such a unique and valuable project.”
