District 9800 has welcomed its latest Global Scholar, Haruka Tanaka, from Japan who arrived in Melbourne on 10 July and is being hosted by Flemington Kensington Rotary. Tanaka is undertaking a Master’s Degree in Education – Development Studies, at the University of Melbourne.

Haruka completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Education at the University of Niigata. She is particularly interested in educating girls, especially focussing on those in underprivileged and Third World countries.

She is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Niigata.  Niigata is known for its snowfields and skiing, and understandably Haruka has found Melbourne’s winter surprisingly warm!

Since arriving in Melbourne, Haruka has taken part in several events with Flemington Kensington Rotary, including the National Tree Day event with Moonee Valley Council.  There she experienced several firsts: her first time planting a seedling; her first experience of a Welcome to Country with an indigenous elder; and her first “Rotary” sausage.

Last month, at one of her more formal events, Haruka attended the Rotary Club of Melbourne meeting where she met DG Ron Payne and completed a banner exchange with President Cris Sotiropolous.
