As the Rotary Club of Yarraville prepares for its fourth annual Acknowledgement Day on January 26th, 2025, we invite all Australians to come together in unity and purpose. This day is an opportunity to celebrate our shared commitment to moving forward together while honouring the rich cultural heritage of the First Peoples of this land, including the Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung peoples, who have nurtured and cared for this country for thousands of years.
Acknowledgement Day is about embracing our collective future, building a community grounded in respect, understanding, and shared goals. This year, we draw inspiration from the platypus, an iconic Australian animal that represents resilience and renewal. The platypus's life cycle, from birth to maturity, symbolizes our journey as a community—growing, learning, and evolving together. By aligning ourselves with the natural rhythms and cycles of our environment, we commit to a future that honours both our natural heritage and our cultural diversity.
The Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung peoples observe six distinct seasons, each uniquely tied to the land. These seasons—Biderap (Dry), Kulin (Hot), Iuk (Eel), Gwangal Moronn (Grass Flowering), Larneuk (Cold and Wet), and Petyan (Wombat)—reflect a deep understanding of the environment and remind us of the interconnectedness of all life. As we celebrate these traditional seasons, we are reminded of the importance of living in harmony with the land and with each other.
We encourage every Australian, from all walks of life, to join us in this celebration of unity and shared purpose. The National Australia Day Council's grant applications open on September 16th, providing a fantastic opportunity for community groups to bring their ideas and initiatives to life. District 9800 is here to support and collaborate with any group dedicated to honoring this day in a meaningful and inclusive way.
Let’s come together, share our stories, and plan for a future where every voice is heard, and every culture is celebrated. Acknowledgement Day is not just about reflecting on the past but about building a brighter, more inclusive future together.
Let’s unite, celebrate our diversity, and commit to a future where we grow stronger, more connected, and more understanding. Respect the past, but let’s walk together toward a future filled with hope, unity, and collaboration.
