Yarra Bank Reserve was the site of the original Palmer's Punt, which joined the City of Richmond with the Parish of Boroondara until 1851, when the punt was replaced with a wooden bridge. The wooden bridge was replaced in the 1860s by the current Hawthorn Bridge, one of the oldest metal bridges in Australia. It is on the land of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, and is imprortant as the site of an ancient scar tree.
