August has been an incredibly busy, but very enjoyable, month in Rotary.
My time has predominantly been spent visiting clubs for the final few changeovers and to start the official DG visit program.
Although the challenge of growing our membership remains, early signs are good with many clubs reporting the induction of new members. Let’s keep working on this.
Happy Birthday to three of our District's clubs: and which clubs were they?
Hawthorn chartered in 1953; Werribee in 1968; and Keilor East in 1983.
In August, these three clubs celebrated their significant anniversaries in different ways. Congratulations to all 3 clubs from all of us in District 9800.
Cambodia's Siem Reap exudes charm and cultural excellence, proudly hosting the ancient wonder, Angkor Wat. In this economically challenged nation, tourism serves as Siem Reap's economic backbone, however, the advent of COVID-19 abruptly severed this lifeline.
Victoria Police and Rotary SAFE Families are building relationships between the Indian community and Police, to encourage the reporting of crime and particularly family violence (a big under-reported problem within their community) and encourage the recruitment of Police and Protective Service Officers in their communities.
In 2019 Rotary Melbourne forged a strategic support partnership with the Hush Foundation, whose mission is to transform healthcare cultures with kindness for all: in other words, Kindness in Health Care – Now More than Ever. As part, of this relationship, Rotary Melbourne members invite you to join them on from 6:00-7:30pm on Wednesday 13 September 2023 at the Lyceum Club, Melbourne for a fun night of fellowship sharing cocktails, and music.
Keilor East Rotarians Debra Sloggett and Helen Penna were in Cambodia in July and shared their leadership and club experiences with the Rotaractors in Siem Reap.
“We really appreciate your valuable time and experience sharing with us so that we can make our club more sustainable and impactful”, is how Tangly Ton, the President of the Rotaract Club of Siem Reap described the mentorship session.
Rotary International President, Gordon McInally, has determined Mental Health as his key priority in a year of ‘Create Hope in the World.’ Across this year there will be a range of initiatives from within our clubs that will support endeavours in this most important area.
Suresh Marcandan (D9800 Chair for Australian Rotary Health) is providing us with an opportunity to become involved in a very meaningful way in this priority area.
There is amazing service work happening across D9800 and I’m encouraging all of our clubs to share our achievements and continue building the very positive D9800 culture of ‘Doing Good’ that I’m witnessing as Deb and I visit our clubs at the present time.
Let me share a great example: RIMERN (Rotary Inner Melbourne Emergency Relief Network)

Get ready to order your Rotary Fruit Cakes and Puddings to raise money for The Rotary Foundation. Last year we raised $27,000. With your help we can double that figure to do even more good in the world.
