Around the District
A Wonderful Start to the Year
The Changeover period is always very busy for clubs and our District Team as we approach the new Rotary year with anticipation about what each new leadership group will bring.
The overlap between DGE and DG for me has been very positive, being involved in many activities where the achievements of the District, clubs and individuals have been recognised and celebrated as they contribute to making a difference for others.
Rochester Men Enjoy Day Out in Shepparton
Sponsored by Rotary Bendigo and fully supported by members of Rotary Rochester, a group of Rochester men recently enjoyed an outing designed as a diversion from the ongoing and unwished-for chores post the major flooding that occurred in October 2022.
It’s more than toilet humour for Dunny Darrel
For almost 10 years Darrel Steer has been comfortable quietly volunteering in remote rural areas in Cambodia.
When I contacted his gorgeous expat friend Sue and asked her to gather his friends for a special celebration surprise, she replied “There is only me, Monk Hun, his team and Gary”.
What transpired was very special.
Homework = Literacy + Peace
The Prahran high-rise public housing has many single mums from overseas with plenty of children running around.
When Rotary Prahran started a Homework Club for one afternoon a week, I was sceptical and resisted getting involved. What could one hour a week actually achieve?
Sanitation needs met in Siem Reap Cambodia High School
While planning for the installation of a Biosand water filtration system at Techo Hun Sen Angkor Thom High school, Siem Reap, Cambodia, the principal asked if our Rotary team would also provide toilets: an opportunity too good to miss for the Rotary clubs of Keilor East and Passport Melbourne.
The school had just 13 toilets for 1,518 students - 921 females and 597 males.
“Creating a Better Future” – Posters for Change
Drawing on a successful project run by Rotary in the UK, expressions of interest are invited to assist in the development of an Online Rotary Poster Design Competition for Years 10-12 secondary students.
The UK project received 4,000 entries with the theme of climate change from primary school students across the country. The posters were shown as part of 'COP26' in Glasgow.
District 9800 Priorities 2023-24
The Rotary International Action Plan continues to guide our work this year and I am encouraging all clubs to build on the work we undertook during our Presidents’ training program to develop a clear sense of what you want to achieve during 2023-24. While your planning work may possibly be complete, it is important for members to keep revisiting what you set out to achieve and to use the framework provided to all clubs as a resource to keep you on track.
Why Networker?
Welcome to the first edition of our Networker for 2023-24.
During this year I would like our Networker to be used for sharing and promoting the wonderful work that happens in clubs and clusters across our District. This is an important goal and one part of the challenge of improving our overall Public Image and, by extension, our membership across D9800.
