Welcome to another bumper issue of Networker. Where is the time going? September has been a very full month with so many wonderful events and experiences. Our District Team has been very active in their respective areas of responsibility and feedback from clubs suggests we are achieving our aim of providing the levels of support to enable clubs to fulfil the Rotary Foundation’s mission to ‘Do Good in the World.’
This month, Deb and I visited a further 11 clubs as we undertake the official DG visit program and our enthusiastic Assistant Governors supported us in this. In most cases, I also held talks with the Boards of the respective clubs and it’s not until you experience the sharing through these occasions that you really appreciate the incredible array of service work being completed in District 9800. I’m now keenly looking forward to the other half of our program across October and November.
Cambodia’s Siem Reap is charming, culturally exquisite, and is home to the ancient wonder of Angkor Wat. In this impoverished country tourism is Siem Reap’s lifeline and COVID severed it.
It would be my great delight if you would consider joining me as I lead my 14th tour on behalf of Rotary in support of humanitarian sustainable projects which are identified and championed by local Khmers.
After a 3-year suspension due to COVID-19, District 9800 is pleased to see the return of the Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) program throughout the Rotary world.
RYE is a premier program of Rotary International and when in full swing, around 8,000 students participate globally in this educational and cultural exchange. As countries restart the program, these numbers are quickly ramping up and next year the program will be back to full strength. Recently, District 9800 welcomed students from Finland, Germany, Denmark, and two from Spain, all of whom are settling in well with their host club families and starting a new school experience.
With financial support from the Rotary Foundation, Rotary Chadstone/East Malvern is one of 18 Rotary Clubs working together to change the lives of over 300 families in Kok Beng a village in remote rural Cambodia by building around 345 washroom/toilets.

Thanks to a collaboration between clubs and the Rotary Foundation, the District has been able to deliver a most exciting project, shipping a container of recycled school furniture from Donations in Kind (DIK) to Timor Leste. As a result of the project, 450 Timorese children in disadvantaged schools are now able to sit at school desk and chair – something children in Australia take for granted.
The District 9800 Australian Rotary Health Committee conducts Mental Health First Aid Courses several times a year with the objective of raising funds for Australian Rotary Health (ARH) initiatives. These courses are open to Rotarians and also the public.
Navigating the landscape of emerging technology can often seem daunting. Recently, Generative AI has come to the forefront as a significant topic of interest, specifically ChatGPT - an AI (Artificial Intelligence)-powered chatbot known for its ability to generate natural-sounding, human-like dialogue.
