Greetings from DG Michael Lapiña

It is with immense gratitude and humility that I accept the role of the new Governor of District 9800. My experiences with Rotary have been nothing short of magical.

Growing up with dreams of being a singer, I eventually became an IT project manager and was introduced to Rotary by Stephen Lake (RC Melbourne). Initially hesitant and intimidated, I found my place thanks to the unwavering support of mentors like John Meehan and PDG Neville John. At Rotary Central Melbourne Sunrise (RCCMS), I struggled to find my fit until I became the Youth Chair, aligning my passion for youth engagement with Rotary’s mission.

Disaster Training for Rotarians, friends and family

The Rotary Club of Melbourne (Rotary Melbourne), and Gender and Disaster Australia (GADAus), have agreed to work together in partnership with Districts and Clubs in disaster prone areas to pilot and roll out the GADAus Lessons in Disaster (LIDs) training.  This training aims to enhance Rotarians understanding of family violence in disaster contexts and leveraging their local knowledge and skills to foster safer, more resilient communities.An opportunity to participate in Lessons in Disaster training is on 18th August hosted by Rotary Club of Bendigo South.

Rotary Clubs and Local Council Greening the Community
National Tree Day Sunday 28 July saw five clubs in the Maribyrnong Valley Community Group partner with Moonee Valley Council for a huge tree planting exercise. Presidents and members from Brunswick-Tullamarine, Flemington-Kensington, Keilor East and North Melbourne joined with Rotary Footscray and braved the clear but wintery conditions to restore, replenish and extend the habitat lost during the 2022 floods of the Maribyrnong River.

Rotary makes childbirth safer in remote Nepal
With a Grant from Balwyn Rotary, and the help of Rotary Clubs in Australia and Nepal, it was possible to establish a birthing centre in a health post in Kangel, a remote area of eastern Nepal.

Jackets and Thermals to Keep out the Melbourne cold
With the support of a District 9800 Foundation Grant The Rotary Club of Essendon was able to work with the organisation Youth Projects, Hosier Lane, to provide warm clothing and jackets for people experiencing homelessness on Melbourne's streets.
