On 17 December, the people of Vanuatu were struck by a devastating earthquake that has left widespread destruction in its wake. Homes have been destroyed, communities disrupted, and countless individuals and families face a long road to recovery. In times of crisis, Rotary’s global network of compassion and action shines brightest, and District 9800 is stepping up to provide support to those impacted.
The District’s Disaster Response Funds will be utilised to assist in the relief efforts. These funds will be directed towards initiatives being led by District 9910, which encompasses the affected region and is coordinating on-the-ground response efforts to address the immediate needs of the communities. A key priority in the recovery efforts is the rebuilding of the ports in Port Vila, which are essential for ensuring the smooth shipping of supplies and aid into the area.
District Governor Elect Peter Shepheard will lead our District’s involvement in this critical initiative. He will be assisted by District Governor Nominee Graeme Hope, who brings additional expertise and dedication to the effort. Together, they will ensure that our District's contributions are effectively directed towards impactful recovery and rebuilding efforts. Peter brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to mobilizing our resources effectively to deliver meaningful support. Under his guidance, our District will collaborate closely with District 9910 to ensure that every dollar contributes to recovery and rebuilding efforts in Vanuatu.
The Disaster Response Funds will help provide essential aid, including shelter, food, and medical supplies, as well as support long-term recovery initiatives. Rotarians across District 9800 are also encouraged to contribute to this effort. Donations can be made directly to the District’s Disaster Response Fund, ensuring that our collective resources create a tangible impact for those in need.
Additionally, a Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) project has been established to facilitate contributions specifically for Vanuatu’s recovery. You can also donate directly to The Rotary Foundation Disaster Response Fund, providing vital support for disaster-affected areas worldwide.
As Rotarians, our shared mission is to serve humanity, and this crisis offers us an opportunity to embody the Magic of Rotary by extending hope and support to the people of Vanuatu. We encourage all clubs to rally together and share this initiative with your members, partners, and communities. Whether through fundraising events, direct contributions, or spreading awareness, your efforts can make a difference.
Together, let us demonstrate the power of Rotary’s global family. Let us show Vanuatu that they are not alone in this challenging time, and that Rotarians are here to support them every step of the way.
